In this tutorial we discuss the essential components that make up the architecture of any vehicle. We discuss the various vehicle types and silhouettes, along with driver and passenger placement. You'll learn about the various types of engines and drivetrain layouts and their effect on vehicle proportions, including Front Wheel Drive (FWD), Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) and All Wheel Drive (AWD). We also discuss Battery Electric (BEV) powertrains and battery configurations. This knowledge is essential for car designers and automotive stylists, in the effort to communicate effectively with engineers, translating brilliant design proposals into real world vehicles.
Assignment: On paper or in Gravity Sketch, create 5-10 side view sketches in a variety of vehicle types and body styles.
This lesson introduces the essential principles of vehicle architecture, and how to set up an accurate dimensional drawing using Gravity Sketch. We discuss how to use the Rigged Chassis and full scale mannequin establish wheel placement and occupant positioning. In this example I'll develop a vehicle package for a sleek, low H-point sports car.
Assignment: Based on a side view sketch of your choice, develop a vehicle package for a sleek, futuristic sports car.
Continuing with our exploration of vehicle architecture, we'll use the Rigged Chassis and full scale mannequin establish wheel placement and occupant positioning for a rugged, high H-point full-size truck.
Assignment: Based on a side view sketch of your choice, develop a vehicle package for tough, capable truck or SUV.
This is essential information for ALL aspiring car designers! This tutorial covers the key considerations when positioning an occupant in any vehicle, whether it's a low, sleek sports car or a high-riding full-size truck. We cover H-point, back angle, hip-to-heel, hand positions, vision angles and vehicle ingress.
Assignment: Based on the information presented, make any necessary adjustments and refinements to your sports car and truck/SUV package drawings
In this tutorial you'll see how an automotive interior package can be quickly sketched out in 3D, using VR. This example of a sleek, low H-point sports car interior is built around the concept of a driver's cockpit, which wraps around the driver and provides absolute control. With a laser focus on the target customer, you can develop a vehicle architecture rooted in the user experience.
Assignment: Sketch out 3-5 vehicle interior package concepts for your sports car.
In this tutorial you'll see an interior package concept based on a high H-point, full size truck. This is a great example of an innovative package concept rooted in the target user experience. In this case, the interior converts from a driving mode to mobile office, for business owners in sustainable home building.
Assignment: Sketch out 3-5 vehicle interior package concepts for your truck or SUV.
Learn to use the power of VR to optimize the vehicle layout and key ergonomics. Sitting in the driver seat in human scale, you can quickly sketch out the optimal placement for the steering wheel , touchscreen controls, seating and information displays.
Assignment: Sketch out the placement of key interior components like the steering wheel, control screens and information displays for your sports car and SUV package. Try several iterations to find the optimal placement of controls and ergonomics, with consideration for the target user.
