Designing a Vehicle Interior in VR

Learn to design and build a complete vehicle Interior in VR! Starting with an exterior model, you'll explore interior package, payout, ergonomics and aesthetics essential to a successful interior experience. You'll develop concepts for instrument panels, steering wheels, door trim and seating. Scroll down to begin!

Designing a Vehicle Interior in VR

Building the Headliner & Pillar Trim

Working our way in from the exterior, we'll start with the headliner and pillar structure. You'll see how this adds a great deal of realism to the transparent glass canopy.

Assignment: Starting with your complete exterior model, design and build your headliner and pillar trim.

Building the Main Interior Tub

The next step is to build out the main interior tub. Combined with the headliner, you now have the complete environment in which to sketch out an interior theme.

Assignment: Starting with your complete exterior model, design and build your main interior tub.

Sketching the Interior Theme

Now that you have a complete interior environment, it's time to start sketching the main interior theme. I usually begin interiors this way, and working in VR gives you a real-time sense of space and scale.

Assignment: 3-5 interior sketches in 3D. Spend time in human scale, put yourself in the driver's seat and pay attention to the layout and placement of the main controls.

Designing a Steering Wheel

Now that you have a basic interior theme sketch with a clear understanding of space and ergonomics, you'll begin to build the Sub-D model beginning with the steering wheel. For driver oriented vehicles, the steering wheel is the centerpiece of the experience.

Assignment: 3-5 steering device concepts that fit your overall vehicle concept and target user. Steering wheel alternatives like joysticks, or autonomous functionality are also allowed if it is essential to your concept.

Seating Design

Now you will learn how I approach seating design in Gravity Sketch using Sub-D. You'll see the contrast in shapes between a driver focused seat, versus a comfortable and luxurious back seat. I'm considering the possibility of making the single rear seat a VIP experience, with a table and foot rest.

Assignment: Design and build your seating concept, based on your best interior sketch and focusing on the needs of your target user. Work around a human scale mannequin, paying attention to anatomy and ergonomics.

Designing the Instrument Panel

In this exercise you'll learn techniques for quickly developing the theme of the instrument panel and doors, in Sub-D using Gravity Sketch.

Assignment: Design and build the instrument panel, based on your best interior theme sketch. Pay attention to the placement of controls and displays for the optimum user experience.

Material Layering

Adding layers of material to the seats, doors and instrument panel brings a much deeper level of realism and craftsmanship to your interior.

Assignment: Design and build additional layers and upholstery to add realism, richness and detail.

Final interior details

Adding layers of material to the seats, doors and instrument panel brings a much deeper level of realism and craftsmanship to your interior.

Assignment: Design and build additional interior details like stitching, seating upholstery, physical controls, heating vents and door trim.

Final Model: Quick Spin

Quick spin inside and out of my final SL Coupe coupe concept, developed as a series of tutorial videos in our Gravity Sketch Certified courses.
