Designing a Vehicle Exterior in VR

Learn to design and build a complete vehicle exterior in VR! This course builds upon the concepts introduced in the 3D Sketch Techniques course, starting with a rough 3D sketch and culminating in a complete, detailed vehicle exterior model. Scroll down to begin! 

Designing a Vehicle Exterior in VR

Turning Speed Shapes Into Vehicles

   In the next exercise we focus on turning speed shapes into vehicles. Starting with one of my early areal vehicle studies, I'll show you how to quickly block in the wheel arches and major volumes of the body. 


 Assignment: Take your best 3D sketch, and develop a complete vehicle design using all of the tools you've learned in the course! 

Wheel Arches, Body Surfacing & Front End Development

   Starting with a rough 3D vehicle model, You'll learn to develop the wheel arches, sculpt them into the body, refine the body surfacing and develop the front end design. 


 Assignment: Turn your rough 3D exterior vehicle exterior into a more complete, refined model. Focus on strong wheel arches, crisp lines and refined surfaces. 

Glass & Body Separation

    Here's a quick tutorial on how to go about separating the glass from the body in an automotive exterior model using Gravity Sketch. The model suddenly takes on a much greater degree of realism. 


 Assignment: Begin separating your glass and body materials. 

Modeling the Exterior Details

    You'll learn how to  approach the exterior details like the grille, lighting and badging. Details like these really begin to add a sense of completeness to the design. 


 Assignment: Develop your exterior details, including your lights and grille. Continue to refine your body lines and surfaces. 

Wheels & Tires

     At last...The WHEELS! Here you'll see some quick and simple techniques for designing a set of wheels and tires, using the Volume Brush and Polar Symmetry. Wheels are an essential part of any complete automotive design. 


 Assignment: Design and build 3-5 wheel design concepts for your vehicle. 

Doors & Cut Lines

      In this conclusion of our exterior VR Design Course, you'll see my technique for quickly sketching out the doors and cut lines. Combined with the wheels, grille and lighting details, we now have a far more realistic representation of the full scale car. On to the interior! 


 Assignment: Design and build 3-5 wheel design concepts for your vehicle.
